Kids create baskets for babies
Sixty children and parents came together for a Baskets for Babies event Dec. 7 hosted by Kids Give Back.
At the event, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Little River Turnpike, volunteers assembled 75 boxes full of baby supplies for low-income, expectant parents.
The kids wrapped cardboard boxes in festive paper and filled them with items for newborns, including clothing, hand-made blankets and hats by a local knitters group, first aid kits, towels, washcloths, bibs, bottles, pacifiers, socks, infant Tylenol, and more. They also assembled gifts for the new moms.
The boxes will be distributed by the Fairfax County Department of Family Services.
Annandale High School student Tyson Perkins spoke about the event on WJLA’s “Good Morning Washington” with Kids Give Back Executive Director Denise Gavilan.
Tyler has been volunteering with Kids Give Back for the past three years. “I really love it because I get to give back. It’s really great to see that we’re making such a big impact on people that need the help,” he said.
“Kids want to be helpful,” Gavilan said. She founded the organization to expand volunteer opportunities for kids and to create fun events that promote teamwork and leadership.
