More than 1,000 residents participated in Volunteer Fairfax 17th Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19. Sixteen service projects and activities benefited the Northern Virginia community. Projects ranged from snack and hygiene kit packing to mental health-focused activities, and providing children with meaningful, hands-on opportunities to learn about volunteerism while honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Participants also donated almost 500 pounds of nonperishable food items, which will benefit Food for Others clients.
“We are grateful for everyone who took part in Volunteer Fairfax’s MLK Jr. Day of Service,” said Jennifer Williamson, CEO of Volunteer Fairfax. “It matters because volunteerism isn’t just something we do on special days. It’s civic infrastructure. It builds trust, strengthens relationships, and keeps people connected to their communities, across ages, neighborhoods, and backgrounds. We didn’t just honor Dr. King’s legacy. We practiced it together.”
