Last year’s Baskets for Babies project brought together young volunteers who wanted to make a meaningful impact during the holiday season.
Liam Finkel, a junior at Gonzaga High School, joined the effort out of compassion for new mothers facing an already overwhelming time. “I thought helping new mothers would brighten their spirits,” he said. “They already have a lot to worry about, so lightening their load and giving them necessities felt important.“ For him, volunteering has become a meaningful part of his life. “Giving back to my community has been so beneficial,” he shared. “Helping others exposes me to new people and experiences.”
Lena O’Geen, a junior at Yorktown High School, echoed his enthusiasm, emphasizing the value of introducing children to service early. She recalled her own childhood experience selecting holiday gifts for children in need—an experience that sparked her love of helping others. “The Baskets for Babies event is a great way for kids to feel that same excitement and joy,” she said.
She also highlighted how even small acts can make a big difference. “There are so many people in our community who need help. Spending an hour putting together bags of food or toiletries can change how someone lives for a week,” she said. “Volunteering is a privilege, and an opportunity to brighten people’s lives.”
Together, Liam and Lena reflect the heart of Kids Give Back: young people stepping up, volunteering, and inspiring others through meaningful acts of kindness.
